“The class is not quite complete, but is certainly shaping up to be one of the most dynamic classes we have brought in since the program moved to Division I,” UAlbany coach Scott Marr said.

“It starts on the back line with tough kids, to an athletic midfield, and tremendous finishers on the front line. I commend my assistants Chris Kivlen and Bill Ralph for their efforts in bringing this group together. It is pleasing to see this develop.”

Meet The Thompsons

The Thompsons have been in the news a lot lately.  The Native American family is full of lacrosse talent, and each of them have been highly anticipated NCAA players.

Jeremy Thompson led OCC to the NJCAA Title

The eldest Thompson brother, Jeremy, is now enrolled at Syracuse to play lacrosse, after completing two seasons at OCC – which is a local community college in Syracuse.  Jeremy’s struggles to gain entrance into Syracuse have been ongoing, until he finally achieved his dream of being enrolled this year.

Brother Miles was also recruited heavily by Syracuse, along with Ty.  Both of them seemed to indicate that Syracuse didn’t show enough interest in them.  After some back and forth, they ultimately decided that Albany would be their new home.

Miles Thompson was named as a high school All-American after accounting for 95 goals and 56 assists as a junior. He led LaFayette High to a 23-1 record and the New York Class C state championship final. Thompson earned a spot on the Syracuse Post Standard All-Central New York first team. He was honorable mention All-Northeast, All-Section III and All-Onondaga Division III.

“SU is like a powerhouse right now. Albany didn’t win anything. We want to change that. We want to start something new.  SU talked to me, and they told me to send my transcript.  I didn’t hear from them after that.” -Miles Thompson

Ty Thompson, also received first-team All-America recognition. He was Section X’s top scorer with 73 goals and 38 assists and led Salmon River High to an 18-1 mark and the program’s first-ever state playoff win. Thompson, who is attending Salisbury School in Connecticut, was chosen Northern Athletic Conference MVP. In addition, he was an honorable mention all-state selection as a forward in ice hockey.

“I’m going where he’s going,” Lyle said referring to his cousin, Miles. “We both made our decision together.”

UAlbany has won four America East Conference championships and made four NCAA Tournament appearances as a Division I program. The Great Danes reached the 2007 NCAA quarterfinals.

Central New York Lacrosse Player Needs Bone Marrow Transplant

12 Nov

Taylor Matt, shown here (top left) with her ethix Girls' Lacrosse Club teammates at a Maryland tournament in November 2008, was diagnosed with leukemia when she was 11. Her diverse background has made her incompatible with any of the 7 million bone marrow donors on the Be a Match Registry.

Taylor Matt needs a hero.

Fifteen minutes on www.marrow.org and a Q-tip swab of the cheek later, and it could be you getting her back to the game of lacrosse that she has loved since fifth grade.

Taylor is a 17-year-old from just outside Syracuse, N.Y. She is a senior who was a tenacious defender last year for the Cazenovia High girls’ lacrosse team that reached the state Section III Class C semifinals. She is looking forward to helping the Lakers go for the championship this spring, but isn’t sure she will get that chance.

In August, Taylor was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia and everything normal about her senior year was put on hold.

“It’s a bummer,” said Taylor, who also plays for the ethix Girls’ Lacrosse Club in Syracuse. “It’s going from one world to another. I’m here and this is what I have to do.”

She has been in Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital in Syracuse ever since her diagnosis and already has undergone two rounds of chemotherapy, but what she really needs is a bone marrow transplant to stop the leukemia from returning forever. Her leukemia had been in remission after she was first diagnosed at 11.

“I had an appointment in June 2009 and I was completely fine,” Taylor said. “I had to come back in a couple months. In August, I knew something was wrong with me.”

New York Empire State Games Are Back – Good News for Lacrosse

9 Nov

In 2009 the New York Empire State Games were canceled for the first time since 1978 due to budgetary reasons.  It was a major blow to the sport of lacrosse, since the summer games served as a major recruiting tool for college-bound players and the coaches that were recruiting them.

But all was not lost, since Tom Hall (Chairman of NYS lacrosse) and Nike stepped in and organized the “New York State Shootout” to fill the void left by the Empire Games.

buffalo_empire_gamesRecently the state announced the games are back on.  The 2010 Games are set for July 21-25 and will be in Buffalo, NY.

Athletes will compete and be housed at area colleges and universities.

The largest competition of its kind in the nation, the Games is a multi-sport event for amateur athletes, patterned after the Olympic program.

Athletes must be residents of the State of New York. Following competition (Regional Trials) in each of six regions of New York State, winners numbering some 6,000 will participate in finals competition.

More info on the games can be found at: http://www.empirestategames.org/summer/about.asp

Pancake Breakfast: Big Lacrosse Hit by Kamren Curtis (video)

The infamous buddy pass on the midfield clear strikes again…

Pancake Breakfast: Big Time Lacrosse Hit (video)

26 Oct

This might be the first time I’ve seen a self-inflicted “yard sale” setup.  On a deadball whistle, the kid starts off a clear by throwing a fake, and a phantom stick check puts the ball on the turf.  On the ensuing GB attempt, it’s lights out.

Friday Fights: West Bloomfield Lakers High School Lacrosse

23 Oct

For the first time in the history of Friday Fights the punches are flying on a field instead of in a box arena.  It appears that West Bloomfield (in green) gets worked by the opposing team.  The team in white should not be praised for this behavior, but they seem to swarm at the first sign of trouble.  Like hockey, fighting is a part of the indoor game, but there’s no place for it on the lacrosse field.
