NCAA Division 1 Men’s Lacrosse Rankings as of 4/18/2011

18 Apr

Coach Corrigan and the Fighting Irish are 9-0 on the season.

Notre Dame takes over the #1 slot this week, while Syracuse slides from first to fourth, following a loss to #3 Cornell and Tewaaraton Trophy favorite, Rob Pannell.

Hopkins continues their run to the top with an impressive OT comeback win over a very strong Maryland squad.  That game could have gone either way, and Maryland fell victim to some questionable referee calls and poor execution at the end of the game.  Either way, Hopkins is for real and getting stronger every week.  Maryland still only has one win over a ranked opponent this season, despite having an 8-3 record.

Duke looked dominant as they controlled Virginia, winning 13-11 (Duke has beaten Virginia in 10 of the last 11 meetings).  Shamel Bratton returned to the field after a team suspension, but never seemed to get things going.  Virginia’s leading scorer Steele Stanwick was sidelined with an injury, which certainly didn’t help things for the Wahoos.

Denver holds on to #6, riding a six-game win streak that included victories over Duke, Loyola, Air Force, and Ohio State.

NCAA: Cornell Lacrosse Knocks Off #1 Syracuse, 11-6

13 Apr

Rob Pannell had 6 points in Cornell's 11-6 win over Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 5 Big Red men’s lacrosse team downed No. 1 Syracuse, handing the previously unbeaten Orange an 11-6 loss this evening in the Carrier Dome. The win, Cornell’s first over a No. 1 team since 2009, snapped a four-game losing streak to Syracuse and improved the Big Red to 9-2 on the season. The Big Red raced out to a 6-1 lead in the early moments of the second quarter and then kept a four-goal cushion for all but a span of 1:21 of the remaining 44:47 of the contest.

Rob Pannell led the way for the Cornell offense with three goals and three assists, but it was the defense that put on a truly impressive show, causing 14 of Syracuse’s 20 turnovers and holding its top two offensive threats, Stephen Keogh and JoJo Marasco to just one combined assist. Thomas Keith and Jason Noble had four caused turnovers apiece, while Mike Bronzino forced three turnovers. Noble also led the team with seven ground balls and Bronzino scooped up five. The defense was ably backed by sophomore goalie AJ Fiore, who made eight saves.

9 Apr

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Steele Stanwick’s goal with 46 seconds remaining in overtime lifted the No. 9 Virginia Cavaliers (8-3, 1-1 ACC) over the No. 5 North Carolina Tar Heels (7-4, 1-2 ACC) on Saturday, 11-10, inside Klöckner Stadium. With the victory, Virginia head coach Dom Starsia owns 324 career wins, needing three more to pass Jack Emmer (326) for the most triumphs while coaching at a NCAA Division I school.

UVa goalie Adam Ghitelman registered his 45th career win between the pipes, passing UMBC’s Jeremy Blevins (2006-09) and tying Cornell’s Matt McMonagle (2004-07) for No. 5 all-time in NCAA Division I history.

Syracuse’s Galloway Sets NCAA Record for Most Wins in Win Over Duke

4 Apr

E. RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Senior John Galloway set the NCAA record for career wins by a goalie, earning his 52nd triumph in top-ranked Syracuse’s 13-11 win over No. 3 Duke (8-3) in the nightcap of the Konica Minolta Big City Classic on Sunday, April 3 at New Meadowlands Stadium. The victory was the eighth straight for Syracuse, which at 8-0, is off to its best start since the 1990 undefeated (13-0) national championship season.

Galloway eclipsed Scott Bacigalupo’s previous record of 51 career wins for Princeton from 1991-94. He finished with a season-best 16 saves against the Blue Devils to earn Konica Minolta Player of the Game honors. Galloway’s overall record stands at 52-6 in 58 career starts.

Offensively, Syracuse displayed a balanced attack that featured nine goal scorers against the Blue Devils. Senior Jovan Miller (2g, 2a), sophomore JoJo Marasco (2g, 2a) and senior Stephen Keogh (3g, 1a) led the way with four points apiece. Miller’s scoring total was a personal best. For Keogh, it was his 18th career hat trick.

“I think it makes you harder to cover,” SU head coach John Desko said of his team’s offensive balance. “If you play with the philosophy that one guy is going to get it done for you and you run into that one game where somebody stops him then everything stops. It’s great that we share the ball like we do and everybody takes turns getting it done for us.”
