The first round of the 2011 Men’s NCAA D1 Tournament is in the books. There were no major upsets to speak of aside from Maryland over UNC (which some wouldn’t consider an upset), but there were a few close calls, and many exciting games. All eight games were televised on ESPN networks in HD, which was a nice upgrade from prior tournaments. The updated bracket is below, and the TV schedule for the Quarterfinals has been updated.

The NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Committee announced the field for its championship tournament today.

The 16-team field includes six conference champions with automatic qualification – American East Conference (Hartford), Colonial Athletic Association (Delaware), Eastern College Athletic Conference (Denver), Ivy Group (Cornell), Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (Siena) and Patriot League (Bucknell).
The remainder of the field was selected at large: Duke University, Hofstra University, Johns Hopkins University, University of Maryland, College Park, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, University of Notre Dame, University of Pennsylvania, Syracuse University, Villanova University, and University of Virginia.
The Division I semifinal and championship games, and the Division II and III championship games, will be held at M & T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland, May 28-30. All Division I first round games will be televised on ESPNU HD May 14 and 15. The Division I semifinals will be televised live on ESPN2 HD starting at 4 p.m. Eastern time, May 28. The championship game will be televised live on ESPN HD starting at 3:30 p.m. Eastern time, May 30.

The championship hosts are Johns Hopkins University, Loyola Maryland, University of Maryland, Baltimore County and Towson University. This is one of only two NCAA team championships, along with women’s rowing, that holds the championships of all three divisions at a common site. The 2012 championships will be held in Boston, Massachusetts.

The NCAA has released their 2nd installment of the RPI rankings. Syracuse stays steady in the top slot, and Virgina broke into the top 5 after appearing #7 on the list last week. Duke slipped down to 6th (from 5th), and Villanova went from #4 down to #8.

NCAA Division 1 Men’s Lacrosse Rankings as of 5/02/2011

Syracuse is back on top after a dominant win over Notre Dame. The Orange delivered the first loss of the season to the Irish in front of 15,000 screaming fans in the Carrier Dome. ND dropped from #1 to #4 in the polls.
Cornell swapped spots with Hopkins to take over #2, while the Blue Jays drop to #3. Cornell clinched the Ivy League with a win over Princeton this weekend.
Maryland remains in the #5 spot, followed by Denver in #6.
Virginia moved up two spots to #9, despite the loss of the Bratton brothers. Shamel Bratton was kicked off the team after multiple violations of “team policies”. Dom Starsia removed Shamel from the team after the players voted on the matter. Twin brother Rhamel Bratton was placed on suspension indefinitely. There were no changes in the top four spots in Week 10 of NCAA Men’s D1 lacrosse. Notre Dame remains unbeaten, with some stiff competition close behind that includes Hopkins, Cornell, and Syracuse.
Maryland finally breaks through into the #5 slot, after taking home the ACC Championship this weekend. The only newcomer to the top 20 this week is Tambroni’s Penn State Nittany Lions, who had a big win over Delaware.

2011 Men’s Lacrosse Tewaaraton Trophy Nominees Announced

Washington, D.C. – With lacrosse season now in full swing, the 2011 Tewaaraton Award is pleased to announce this year’s nominees. Awarded to the top male and female collegiate lacrosse player, the Tewaaraton award is the nation’s pre-eminent collegiate lacrosse accolade.
A watch list which began with over 100 names has been whittled down to 25 males and 24 females. This year’s nominees represent 23 different schools and some of the country’s top lacrosse programs. Five male and five female finalists will be selected from the nominees. Finalists will be invited to the award ceremony in June where a male and a female winner will be honored.
“In now its 11th year, the Tewaaraton Award continues to establish itself as the pre-eminent collegiate lacrosse honor,” said Robert Sweeney, President of the Greater Washington Sports Alliance. “This year’s field is one of the best yet, and our selection committees have done a tremendous job sorting through the brightest talent in the college lacrosse world. We are looking forward to another exciting finish to the lacrosse season and seeing what the nation’s best players have to offer.”
