SYRACUSE, N.Y. (from press release) – Senior Cody Jamieson scored a career-high four goals to lead top-ranked Syracuse (1-0) past Denver, 15-9, in the season opener for both teams at the Carrier Dome on Friday, Feb. 19. It was the 10th straight win for the Orange, the longest active winning streak in the nation.

Jamieson scored on four of his six shots against the Pioneers (0-1). He led an Orange offense that saw 11 different players score goals and six players record at least two points. The Orange’s other offensive leaders were junior attackman Stephen Keogh, who contributed two goals, and senior Chris Daniello, junior Jeremy Thompson, junior Jovan Miller and freshman JoJo Marasco, who each had a goal and an assist. Miller also collected six ground balls to tie for team-high honors in that category.

Syracuse got off to fast start Friday with two goals in the opening minute and never let up. Miller tallied the first goal of the year for Syracuse just 41 seconds into the contest. Sophomore Kevin Drew followed with an unassisted tally on the team’s next possession to put the hosts up 2-0 at the 14:07 mark of the first quarter. The two early goals kick-started a blitzkrieg that saw the Orange score on eight of its 13 shots in the opening period on its way to an 8-2 advantage after 15 minutes.

Syracuse tallied the last four goals of the quarter, including two in the span of six seconds to close the period’s scoring. After Thompson assisted on a Josh Amidon goal at the 3:31 mark, he won the next faceoff and found the cage himself with 3:25 left in the quarter to push the SU lead to six.

Overall, seven different SU players registered goals in the first quarter, including Jamieson who found the cage twice. The Orange continued to pour it on, leading 10-3 at the half, and taking its largest margin (14-4) after a three-goal run in the third quarter that featured back-to-back Jamieson tallies. The Pioneers rallied late, scoring five of the game’s last six goals to close the gap. They outscored the Orange, 4-1, in the fourth quarter, but never seriously threatened the hosts.

Friday’s win improved Syracuse head coach John Desko’s record to 12-5 all-time against Denver’s Bill Tierney. It was also the team’s 14th straight season-opening victory.

The Orange returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 28. Syracuse will host Army at 5 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. The game will be televised live in Syracuse on Time Warner Cable Sports.
