The Major League Lacrosse Supplemental Draft is one of two drafts held by the league each season in order to allow teams to fill its rosters with the best players in the world. The Supplemental Draft is often overlooked compared to the Collegiate Draft due to its limited fanfare but it is one of the major ways teams fill their rosters, and often includes many of the biggest names in the sport.
The Supplemental Draft allows the league’s teams to pick eligible players that have been placed in the league’s “Player Pool”. The player pool begins to take shape when teams submit their 23-man protected player lists in late September. Players that are unprotected by their teams are placed in the player pool and become eligible for the Supplemental Draft.
In addition to these players, any player that may have taken time off for other obligations or are coming back from an injury and did not play with a team in the previous season is eligible to be added to the player pool and taken in the draft.
Once a player is selected in the draft, they must sign a contract in order to participate with their new team. If they fail to sign this contract, they will not be allowed to play and will have to wait until the following year’s draft to become involved with a team again.
This year’s Supplemental Draft features some of the biggest stars in the game looking to make an impact on the 2010 MLL season.
Notable players that are eligible for the Supplemental Draft are:
- Casey Powell – MLL’s all time assist leader (138) and 2005 MLL Offensive Player of the Year. He is a 3 Time MLL Champion, winning titles in 2001, 2003, and 2008.
