Major League Lacrosse 2009 Season Awards – Paul Rabil MVP

Major League Lacrosse and Warrior have announced their 2009 MLL season superlatives.  Every player (and one coach) on the list will appear in the MLL Championship Weekend, which kicks off this Saturday.  There are two semi-final games on Saturday, followed by the final game on Sunday.  For more on the match-ups and scheduling, click here.

  • Most Valuable Player

Paul Rabil, Midfield, Boston Cannons
Rabil earned seven first-place votes, adding up to 44 points. For a second time in the end of year awards process, Merrick Thomson of the Toronto Nationals was in the number two spot in the voting, finishing with three first-place votes, totaling 27 points.

  • Offensive Player of the Year

Paul Rabil, Midfield, Boston Cannons
Rabil earned six first-place votes, and received a total of 44 points. The close runner-up was the Toronto National’s Merrick Thomson, who also received a total of six first place votes but received a total of 42 points, falling just short of Rabil’s count.

  • Defensive Player of the Year

Brodie Merrill, Defense, Toronto Nationals
Merrill received seven first-place votes and totaled for 39 points. Denver Outlaw Lee Zink finished second in the voting with one first-place vote, finishing with 23 points.

  • Goalie of the Year

Jesse Schwartzman, Denver Outlaws
Schwartzman received a total of 52 points and 8 first-place votes. Brian Dougherty of the Long Island Lizards, who has won the award on three previous occasions, was second having received 28 points and 3 first-place votes.

  • Most Improved Player

Chris Eck, FO, Boston Cannons
Eck received three first-place votes and tallied 18 points, while his Cannons’ teammate Sean Morris finished second in the voting with 15 points.

  • Rookie of the Year

Dan Hardy, Midfield, Denver Outlaws
Hardy received 17 points to win the award, while his Denver teammate Max Seibald, finished second in the voting with 15 points. Seibald, the 2009 Tewaaraton Trophy winner, finished fifth among rookies in scoring, with 9 goals, 2 two-point goals, and 1 assist for 12 points.

  • Sportsman of the Year

Tim Goettelmann, attack, Long Island
During this past season, Goettelmann created the charity, Monster’s Kids, named after his on field nickname “the Monster”, given to him for his 6’4” frame and hard lined play on the field.

  • Coach of the Year

Brian Reese, Denver Outlaws
Reese received a total of 52 points and nine first place votes. Boston Cannons Coach Bill Daye was a distant second in the voting, receiving 18 points.  Last season, Reese finished third in the voting for Coach of the Year, while receiving four first-place votes.
