An Australian lacrosse player waves from quarantine in South Korea
The under-21 Australian lacrosse team was quarantined in South Korea last Saturday after a 19-year-old player was diagnosed with swine flu. The sick teen was moved to a hospital about two hours away from Seoul. Fifteen of his teammates and ten team staff remain quarantined in hostile-style accommodations.
Australia fielded only seven players in its first match against Hong Kong yesterday, and still managed to win 10-8, but had been forced to forfeit today’s game, he said.
The team still had a slim chance of making Sunday’s finals. Eight players would take the field for tomorrow’s game, and the United States team had agreed to delay the match scheduled for Friday until Saturday morning, giving the Australian team back-to-back matches on Saturday.
Members of the team have made a video appeal for their freedom before they lose the chance to play in an international tournament. It’s great to see they are maintaining a sense of humor in what appears to be a very frustrating situation.
