A few weeks ago we wrote about “Warrior”, the serious lacrosse-themed movie being made in Hollywood. Today we discovered that “Warrior” may have some stiff competition as another lacrosse movie is in the works, and has set a goal to be “the first mainstream lacrosse movie out of Hollywood”.
Instead of a serious teen-drama about high-school lacrosse, the new movie “Crooked Arrows” will be a comedy set on an Indian reservation in Upstate NY.

Steve Rash has signed on to direct “Crooked Arrows,” an underdog sports comedy set in the world of lacrosse.Mitchell Peck and Adam Leff, who co-wrote and exec produced “Bio-Dome,” are producing with J. Todd Harris (“Bottle Shock”). The trio are fans of the sport and, in the words of Peck, aim to make “the first mainstream lacrosse movie out of Hollywood.”
They are finalizing financing and sponsorships for a late-summer shoot in the Northeast. They have already lined up endorsements from Major League Lacrosse, the National Lacrosse League, US Lacrosse and LaxFestUSA. The producers also are talking to sports brands, colleges and prep schools.
The sport’s origins date back to northeastern American Indian tribes in the 1100s, and “Arrows” will have a Native American angle, with the story set on an upstate New York reservation.
The film centers on a 30-year-old of mixed blood who must postpone his casino-building dreams to coach the inept local Native American high school lacrosse squad against the prep school league in which he used to star.
Todd Baird wrote the script. Jacques Vroom III and Marc Marcum will co-produce.
Gersh-repped Rash, who is part Cherokee and whose son played lacrosse in prep school, has a history of working with young actors; he directed “Can’t Buy Me Love” and sequels to “American Pie,” “Bring It On” and “Road Trip.”
Leff, who also co-wrote “The Last Action Hero” and “PCU,” has fashion documentary “Valentino: The Last Emperor,” which he co-exec produced, coming out in the spring. Peck has “Priest” in development at Sony Screen Gems, and longtime producer Harris is exec producing “Piranha 3D” for the Weinstein Co.
